What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

Where does it come from?

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem

Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.

Where can I get some?

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don’t look even slightly believable.

If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn’t anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text. All the Lorem Ipsum generators on the Internet tend to repeat predefined chunks as necessary, making this the first true generator on the Internet.

It uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words, combined with a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable. The generated Lorem Ipsum is therefore always free from repetition, injected humour, or non-characteristic words etc.

Social media

Prior to the advent of the Internet and mobile phones, people used to interact with one another through snail mail, landlines and personal meetings. Once the Internet and mobile phones made their entry the interaction changed drastically to include conversations and messages over mobile phones and longer communication through emails. With smartphones and computers, these interactions took on an audiovisual character and people started interacting with videos. Today, the ubiquitous smartphone is the premier communication device.

With the growth of smartphones, a new phenomenon erupted in the form of social media. Social media networks exploded uniting people all over the world irrespective of their language or location. They could communicate with anyone, anywhere, anytime as though they were speaking to one another face-to-face. The penetration levels are huge with nearly 3.2 b active social media users. Obviously, Internet penetration is far higher in developed countries than in developing countries.

While social media took the world by storm, people started looking at social media as a tool of marketing and spawned the growth of Internet giants such as Facebook, Twitter, WeChat, Instagram, Skype and YouTube. It was just a matter of time before the power of social media entered the education scene as an innovative tool of learning.

How is Social Media Relevant to Learning?

The combination of several technologies used in social media is highly useful in the field of education. In fact, the phenomenal success of Facebook, Twitter, WeChat, Instagram, Skype and YouTube gives impetus to the process of learning for students.

The social media characteristic of being social is the driving force behind the utility of social media in learning. How can anyone dispute the many important aspects of social media? The aspects that are powerful include

  • The power of sharing – every student can share with one another. Teachers can share with their students. Students can get exposed to new teachers. Teachers can teach to students who are not their regular students. Specific tools such as Google forms or Google Maps can bolster the learning process. Each and every social media platform is amenable to sharing
  • The power of collaboration – students can collaborate with one another by looking at one issue simultaneously or separately. They can share files through a host of tools such as Evernote or Trello or Slack or Google Forms. These tools help to keep track of the collaborative efforts
  • The power of exchange of ideas – this is a powerful resource as students can see other peoples’ points of views and can exchange ideas with teachers, industry professionals and experts in a particular field
  • The power of creativity – students can become creative when they interact with other students or teachers. They can test their creative ideas with others who are thinking similarly or have opposite points of view
  • The power of new information – with social media students can look at new sources of information hitherto limited to textbooks and what is available in the physical library. With the power of social media, they can have access to new sources of information
  • The power of universal reach – social media helps to reach out to other students in countries other than the host country. These become more important when dealing with social subjects involved in people, culture, customs, practices and legal systems
  • The power of audio-visual media – from the mundane physical library to the sometimes strenuous classroom lectures, students can now learn from powerful visual media techniques such as videos, PowerPoint presentations and interactive webcasts and video conferencing
  • The power of universal language – technologies are available that can take any language and translate the same to any person in whatever language the person is familiar with. Thus, language is no barrier at all

Thus, social media can transcend any barrier to bring the learning process to anyone with a social media profile.

The technology used in social media is far advanced allowing students to stay connected with whatever device the students are using at any given point in time. Since the Internet connects everyone, the social media tools are available 24/7 anywhere irrespective of the location and time. Thus, there is no need to get back to a designated place to keep abreast of events.

The engines of social media in learning

With the huge strides made by social media giants such as Facebook, Twitter, WeChat, Instagram, Skype and YouTube, students can view them as engines of learning. The many ways in which these engines impact students include

Facebook

With more than 2 billion accounts, Facebook is by far the leading social media vehicle. The social media giant has many features that can assist in learning outcomes for students.

VoiceThread

This is a web-based application enabling conversations involving images, audio and video. VoiceThread is particularly useful for teaching disciplines such as literature, art, languages, science and medicine.

Twitter

The 330 million Twitter users can use the Twitter resource to collect information categorized as news and opinions. This is a micro-blogging site capable of providing succinct information.

Blogs

Social media is revolutionizing learning process for students and they can now learn anytime without any encumbrance of physical locations. The real greatness of social media is the capability of new students emerging who hitherto could not have access to learning modules because of various factors such as being enrolled in colleges. With social media, they can truly educate themselves.

Dsquad
Dsquad – Get Found Online

It is not easy to get leads these days.

According to HubSpot generating leads is the biggest challenge for a business.

But you are not alone. You may be well known for the basic process of generating leads.

But now I am going to share with you eight hacks to double your leads right away.

You read it right. Follow these simple steps to double it.

Use Exit Intent Pop-Ups

Many marketers don’t like to have a pop-up on their site.

But the truth is, an exit intent pop-up works well and will help you generate more leads.

Exit-Intent-Popups

These pop-ups help you to communicate something important to the visitor, where they can take action.

Research shows 10-15% of your site visitors who leave your website can be converted.

These pop-ups can be built with tools like OptinMonster. They can help you customise exit popups and track your visitors.

Use Relevant Lead magnets

Lead Magnets are like showing a relevant offer to a potential customer.

The ultimate goal for lead magnets is to maximise the number of leads you are getting to a targetted offer.

Lead magnets

They can be like an eBook, checklist, resource list, white papers,  video series, Free shipping or a different kind of guide that is helpful to the user.

Lead Magnets need to be a particular solution to a specific market. And don’t over promise.

With the appropriate Lead Magnet in place, your business will become a lead and sales generating machine.

Push Notifications

Push notifications are a great means to attract potential leads, by sending visitors appropriate information and offers based on their behaviour.

For abandoned carts, this is a great way to convince visitors to go through a purchase.

notifications

You can remind the potential customer about his purchases in their cart.

Not only this, but you can also send Time-bound Offers and Deals and Personalised offers.

Tracking Push notifications can help you understand customer behaviour, and you can optimise accordingly.

Free Giveaways

Ever wondered the simplest form of getting leads is to bribe a person?

You heard me right. Giving away something can generate more prospects.

If you want to generate leads or email subscribers or Facebook likes, you can create a contest.

For example, use a contest and give away $1000 to one winner.

You will get a bunch of emails or facebook likes. But these won’t be qualified leads unless you have the best product.

But how do you find better success and generate qualified leads by Free Giveaways?

If you want to succeed you need to offer a gift certificate or one of your product, here, you can attract leads who are interested in your business.

Use ChatBots

Chatbot refers to communicating with humans using Artifical Intelligence(AI).

Chatbots goes way beyond customer service and gives a business huge opportunity to scale.

These are very helpful to collect precepts and to grow the email list.

Chatbots

You can use chatbots on Facebook, or on your website/landing pages.

Companies like IntercomDrift provides chatbots which you can use.

You can also customise chatbots for your needs.

If you are not using chatbots for your lead generation campaigns, you are leaving a lot on the table.

Landing Pages for Specific Content Offers

Having many call-to-action buttons doesn’t guarantee you leads.

In fact, most people don’t submit their details after clicking CTA. The Exit rate will be huge.

But how do you make them complete the contact form?

By creating a landing page that specifies some offers. This will help the customer to understand what you are offering.

Make sure you show them what offers they are after.

Also, take care of the page copy so that it helps your potential customers to better understand your product or service.

Don’t Ask Too Much Information

A customer never wants to give their personal details.

Asking for more information about your prospects will lower your conversation rate.

Remember the more information you ask your customer, the less interested they will be in submitting their details.

Long contact forms never convert better than short ones. Don’t scare your visitors by long contact forms.

If you want to collect more information use a two-step form. But remember saving the step 1 before visitor leaves.

If you ask me I will say, better get their email and start the conversation and nurture the lead until they give you full information.

Share Case Studies

Case studies are some effective content pieces to generate leads.

These will help the potential customer by answering their questions by providing detailed examples of your product or service.

case studies

Today, by way of effective content writing, forum posting and social bookmarking, a small business can advertise its products for free even.

This, however, doesn’t work with conventional, offline advertising because of it’s passive and general nature.

This is where online marketing helps them to specify their audience to whom their advertising can be targeted, considering specific location, age, and gender.

Improved credibility

A recent study by Harvard Business School has shown that online marketing offers smaller businesses a much more powerful platform to improve their credibility.

Statistics revealed by the study show that small online businesses have grown by 31 percent since 2016 because their sites contain all relevant information prospective clients need to know.

This is more so as small businesses take the initiative of often sending follow up emails to customers who make purchases from their online stores to thank them and even offer discounts for future purchases.

This gesture along with invitations to submit product reviews on their website also help build a stronger community.

NO, it is not.

Remember Google Page Speed Insights evaluates per page, not per domain.

As an example, let’s look at the information regarding an example website.

Page Speed

There are different factors which impact these metrics.

This tools also gives you suggestions on where to improve.

Based on the browsing history of the Chrome browser, Google evaluates two categories of load speed optimisation focused on user experience, FCP, and DCL.

Let’s dig deep into them.

The First Content Display (FCP) metric measures when a user sees a visual response from the page.

With faster responses, there are more chances of keeping users involved.

The DOM Content Loading (DCL) metric measures when the HTML document was loaded and parsed.

The faster the website, the lesser will be the bounce rate.

Not all sites are graded; they need to have enough traffic and data from the Chrome user experience report to be graded.

For example, my Website has no data for page speed:

PSI Dsquad

You can also see the list of optimisations to improve speed.

Now let us go in deep with the optimisation techniques.

Image optimisation

Images are primarily responsible for the slow loading of the website.

The size of the images does matter.

The larger the image, the longer it will take for the image to download it on the size, thus the higher load time.

My recommendation is to have an image size less than 100Kb, but it is not always possible.

For example, banner images that have larger dimensions use more pixels.

But there is an effective way to reduce the size of images without losing quality.

Tools like compressor.io can help you reduce the image size without losing quality.

Access the tool, upload the images to be optimised.

You can then download the compressed images for use or replacement on your site.

You can see how much the above image is reduced and you can check the quality.

Leveraging Browser Cache

Leveraging browser cache is bit hard task over the years.

But not now, with some excellent plugins.

Cache stores data for future requests to serve the data faster.

The search for page resources on the network is slow.

Every time you visit a website, all the resources will be downloaded to your browser.

The download may require multiple round-trip journeys between the browser and the server, which slows down processing and can block rendering of page content, as well as causing data costs for the visitor.

All server responses need to specify a cache policy to help the browser determine in which situations it is possible to reuse a previously searched response.

On Apache servers, it is possible to determine cache validators via .htaccess of each site file type.

For those who work with WordPress, some plugins facilitate this process, such as WP Total Cache, WP Rocket.

Before using these plugins, please take a backup of your site.

Eliminate Render Blocking javascript and CSS

Another factor which impacts speed of your website.

You need to understand how browsers behave.

Before rendering a page, the browser needs to fetch all parts of layout rendering, styles, and effects by analysing HTML markup.

During this process, whenever the parser encounters a script or CSS, it has to stop and run it before continuing to parse the HTML.

It is necessary to minimise JavaScript blocking, especially in case of external scripts that need to be fetched before they are executed.

The scripts required to render page content can be inserted inline to avoid extra network requests.

However, the content you enter needs to be small.

In case of CSS, it is more or less the same principle.

Developers have the custom of creating several external CSS files, and some of them are small.

External CSS files increase the demand for searching the files on the network, which causes latency.

It is necessary that small external CSS files are inserted inline in HTML.

For large files, you need to insert inline the part responsible for rendering the content above the page fold.

My site can serve as an example of CSS optimisation.

Compress JavaScript, CSS & HTML

Did you know that spaces, blank lines and comments increase the size of JavaScript, CSS and HTML files?

It is essential to compress, or rather to eliminate, unnecessary content in such files.

Combine CSS

Depending on the quantity and size of files, it makes a huge difference in loading speed.

Try compressing all these files to improve the load times.

Reduce server response time

The biggest factor to load a website is it DNS.

Website speed depends on how long it will take for the DNS lookup to execute.

A Domain Name System is a server with a database of IP addresses and their hostnames.

How DNS works?

When you type a URL into your browser, the DNS server translates that URL into the IP address online.

DNS lookup starts the process of finding the DNS record associated.

Your Internet Service providers will perform a DNS lookup to find the IP address related to that URL.

The time taken by these steps to complete the process determines how fast your DNS provider is.

If not, it may be time to change to a faster DNS provider.

Choose the Right Hosting

Choosing the right hosting provider can help you increase the load speed of your website.

There are different types of Hosting Providers:

Shared Hosting Providers

Dedicated Hosting Providers

Shared hosting uses tens or thousands of websites on the same server.

This reduces costs, which are distributed among customers who share the same server, but in many cases they limit RAM.

The response time for file transfer of the site is compromised, and your site may only use part of the resources the server.

In shared everything all resources are limited, and you will have more server response time.

Always opt for dedicated hosting, because in this case, the server will be only for your site and the performance is better than shared hosting.

Response time can also be reduced in Dedicated hosting

On the other hand, the cost is much higher for a dedicated server, but it will pay off.

Use a Content Delivery Network.

If your site is getting a decent amount of traffic, you need to use CDN to reduce server requests.

When your website was hosted on one server, every user who visits your site sends a request to the same server.

This increases in the time to process each request, slowing down the load times for all users.

For the users who are away from your server, the load time will be higher.

CDN Map

A Content Delivery Network can help you eliminate these issues.

With CDN, the file requests from the user’s browser are routed to the closest server, caching your site on global server network.

For example, your site is in India and a person visits from the USA, while you are using CDN, the routing looks like this.

There are some good CDN like MaxCDN and Cloudflare, where you can start using it right away.

Use AMP

AMP stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages, a project that involves Google, LinkedIn, Twitter and Pinterest.

The goal is to create a default HTML page so that it loads faster on mobile devices.

AMP is a set of HTML settings that optimise page loading time on mobile devices.
